Welcome to Stockholm!
Many international conferences on Doping in Sport have been organized over the last several decades. However, the use of doping substances has spread way beyond the athletic population to people of different ages, not the least to young people without any athletic ambitions.
Some studies have linked the use of doping substances, in particular androgenic-anabolic steroids, to violent crimes. Other studies from different parts of the world have shown a worrying use of such drugs in high school students. Consequently, the use of doping substances has been increasingly recognized as a public health issue and a number of countries have introduced legislation against doping.
The intention with the announced symposium is to bring experts and interested parties together in order (i) to establish the present situation of the use of doping substances in society, (ii) evaluate its impact on public health, and (iii) discuss strategies to combat the use of doping substances in society.

At the reception on May 9th, 2011 in Waterfront Congress Centre and with Stockholm City Hall as the backdrop. From left Professor Arne Ljungqvist, Harriet Wallberg-Henriksson, President of the Karolinska Institutet, Karin Mattsson Weijber, President of the Swedish Sports Confederation, Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth, Ministry of Culture, Pia Zätterström, President of the Swedish Sports Education Council and Stefan Lindeberg, President of the Swedish Olympic Committee.

In particular, the Swedish Ministry of Culture, the Karolinska institutet, the Swedish Sports Confederation, the Swedish Sports Education Council and the Swedish Olympic Committee made a joint donation to be used for the organization of an Anti-Doping Symposium in Professor Arne Ljungqvist's name during the year 2012.
It is our hope that the symposium will receive your attention and that you place the date 21-22 September 2012 in your calendars.
Further information about the program, application procedures etc. will be circulated in due course.
